"When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all gathered in the Upper Room." Acts 2:1
What is the Upper Room? In scripture, we hear that there was a place where the disciples met and gathered as a group. It was the place of the first Christian Community (Acts 1:13-14). It was the place where the disciples received for the first time the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). But, it was not only a place they gathered after Jesus had been with them, but a place they gathered many times with Jesus. In fact, the Last Supper that Jesus celebrated with His friends was celebrated in the Upper Room (Mark 14:12-16). The Upper Room, also known as the 'Cenacle' in Latin, was a very important place for Jesus and the Disciples.
It was in the Upper Room where they shared stories together, built relationships together, shared their joys, their successes, their frustrations, and their triumphs. They prayed together in the Upper Room. They discussed issues that were effecting them in their ministry. They gathered together, broke bread, and shared meals in the Upper Room. They learned about Jesus, they read scripture, they learned about each other, but essentially they left the comfort of the Upper Room to go out and change the world.
We bring the spirit of the Upper Room now to our own Youth Ministry program here at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. We call our high school meeting spot, "The Upper Room." We title our sessions that take place here our "Upper Room Life Nights." For, this is our place to pray, to learn about our faith, to discuss issues effecting us each day, to build community, to break bread, and to share our lives together. And, just like the Disciples, we leave the Upper Room each week with the same challenge to change the world.
Upper Room Life Nights are open to all those in High School, grades 9-12. They take place on most Sunday's throughout the year from 6:30-8:00pm. The calendar is not only printed on this blog but also the seasonal calendars can be downloaded from the column on the left.
Upper Room Life Nights are not just for those who are in our Confirmation program. They are open to all those in High School, whether or not they are in Confirmation or already Confirmed. In fact, those who are already Confirmed should come to Upper Room Life Nights as a way to life out your spirituality and your Confirmation.
This year in the Upper Room, we are going to add special small groups for those who are Juniors and Seniors. That way, those who are Juniors and Seniors can discuss on a different level then those who are in 9th or 10th grade. Come as much or as little as you want. Bring a friend, or two, or three...
We hope to see many of you in the Upper Room throughout our summer activities and in the Fall. Come Holy Spirit!
